A Handbook for Assessing Your Team
Introduction
Employees need to receive feedback on their performance and how well it fulfills expectations so that they can pinpoint areas in which they can improve and concentrate on those areas while also continuing to build on and extend their existing talents. Companies make money when they are able to increase employee performance and when they are able to identify and capitalize on the potential of their workforce.
Make Expectations Clear
Workers need clear guidance on their responsibilities and an outline of what defines successful work. Give as many specifics as you can and include examples if you like.
Provide Ongoing Feedback
While evaluating employees is a formal procedure at many companies, it really should be ongoing. Managers are obligated to provide continuous feedback to their employees throughout the year and as quickly as possible following any performance, good or negative.
Commit to No Surprises
The worst thing that can happen during an evaluation is for an employee to be startled by performance comments, especially if the report is poor. There shouldn't be any unexpected developments during the review session.
Focus on Development
Although looking back over a period of time to provide feedback is an important part of the employee evaluation process, looking forward is just as, if not more, important. As part of the evaluation process, employees should talk about opportunities for professional growth.
Encourage Two-Way Discussion
It is not appropriate for managers to conduct employee assessments in the form of a monologue in which the management relays information while the employee merely takes it in. During the course of the evaluation, there should be a conversation between the employee and the management so that both parties can share their ideas, points of view, and goals for the subsequent reporting period.
Conclusion
Recognize the main contributions that the person you're reviewing contributed to the company's success.
